Richard gave a Keynote Lecture at the Annual Meeting of Finnish Geographers (Maantieteen päivät), 2021 at the University of Oulu, Finland.
The lecture, entitled “Sustaining Arctics? Between Climate Change and Decolonising in Northern Research”, discussed emergent themes from the AC project, and discussed how pressures from climate change are interfacing with issues around indigenous participation in knowledge production in and around the Arctic. The Annual Meeting, or ‘Geography Days’, was preceeded by a week-long specialist PhD course about reseach practices and design for geographers interested broadly in sustainable development. Richard taught the course as a Guest Professor together with his colleagues Päivi Lujala (from the host Department of Geography at Oulu) and Hilde Refstie (from the Department of Geography at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim). This was a great experience for professors and students alike, and fascinating connections were made between the themes of the AC project and related issues arising in student research in Africa, Asia and Europe.
