12 November 2022: Liz attends AAA Annual Meeting in Seattle

Liz Walsh presented a paper at the American Anthropological Association’s Annual Meeting in Seattle, Washington this week.

Liz’s paper, ‘Extracting the Wilderness: Indigenous Sovereignty, Settler Imaginaries, and Arctic Oil Development,’ was one of five presented in a panel titled ‘Extractive Futures: Examining Resource Frontiers through Temporalities of Dispossession.’  Liz’s contribution, based on her previous research, examined how both pro-oil and mainstream environmental narratives popularized by actors outside of the Arctic are ‘extractive.’  In the paper, she demonstrated the ways in which Indigenous voices in the Arctic are subject to evaluations of their authenticity based on settler colonial expectations.
