Last week, Liz Walsh visited Kivgiq in Utqiaġvik, Alaska, where she previously carried out her PhD research.
Kivgiq, also known as the Messenger Feast, brings together members of all of the North Slope’s constituent communities, as well as visitors from other parts of Alaska and Western Canada. Traditional dancing, gift giving, and sharing traditional food are highlights of the festivities. Utqiaġvik is the farthest northern community in the US.
