As part of his Canadian fieldwork, Morgan Ip visited the Avataq Cultural Institute, Montréal, Quebec.
Morgan met with curators Isabelle Avingaq and Natasha Joannis, and conducted research in the stores and collections of the Avataq Cultural Institute. Together they discussed the mission objectives of the institute as a foundational cultural organisation supporting contemporary Inuit culture in Nunavik and as an accessible repository of the region’s material culture. This included a detailed look at Avataq’s collection and its relationship to the research of the Arctic Cultures project, specifically a bone game regionally called inugaq and themes related to issues of collection and representation.
